The most vital step you can take for community safety this fall is learning how to keep communicating when traditional systems such as cell phones and internet fail. The Community Emergency Radio Association (CERA) founded the Neighborhood Radio Watch (NRW) groups to ensure that communities like ours can stay connected during catastrophic disasters like major wildfires.

The NRW program teaches neighbors to use simple, inexpensive radios to:

• Share real-time information and cooperate locally with each other to stay informed about wildfire and weather related emergencies that may involve evacuation warnings or orders.
• Have a backup for grid failure and establish a communication link that works even when power and commercial communication networks are down.

This program is not a replacement for 911, but it's a reliable backup system that allows residents to help themselves and each other when minutes count.
